ETH Zurich Practical Course in Atmosphere and Climate

This spring, ReCLEAN partnered with ETH for the Practical Course in Atmosphere and Climate Sciences that was held at the Lägern forest station, near Baden. This course is for third-year bachelor students studying Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Interdisciplinary Natural Sciences at ETH Zurich.

The course’s objective is to familiarize participants with modern instrumentation and analysis methods, collect data, and evaluate them concerning the atmosphere’s state and the relevant processes of interest.

About 30 students took part in the course, at the beginning of March 2024 they installed a trailer full of instruments to measure various atmospheric variables, and optical particle counters on the Lägern tower to measure the particle concentration at various heights (45m, 30m, and ground level), and passive samplers in multiple locations to characterize the spatial distribution of NO2 and coarse particles.

Throughout the rest of the semester, they regularly went to the station to check on the instruments, download the data, and retrieve the samples. Finally, at the end of May 2024, the students presented their research and showed interesting insights into meteorology, gas composition, and particle analysis, including pollen, dust, and PM concentrations. The students’ efforts have given ReCLEAN a deeper understanding of the atmospheric processes at Lägern, forming a solid foundation for the upcoming field campaign.

We extend our gratitude to all those who have contributed to this project, including the students, their supervisors U. Krieger, R. Modini, A. Prevot and R. Spirig, the manager of the station P. Waldner, and all those involved in the project. Their dedication and supervision have deepened our understanding of the environment at Lägern and paved the way for future studies.
