ReCLEAN represented at the World Food Forum 2024

World Food Forum 2024 in Rome, Italy

Jize Jiang attended the World Food Forum 2024 as an academic delegate from ETH Zurich. The WWF 2024 was held from October 14th to 18th at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italy. The theme of this year’s WFF is “Good food for all, for today and tomorrow”, organized around three pillars – Global Youth Action, Science and Innovation and Hand-in-Hand Investment.

Throughout the event, a main topic that was discussed is addressing the meaningful participation of young people in policy-making and youth-led projects and initiatives towards sustainable agri-food systems. On the 16th October, Jize co-organized a side event “Beyond the Price Tag: Let’s talk about the true cost of food” together with other academic delegates from Switzerland. This Swiss event attracted a wide audience and offered insights into the hidden cost of food systems through expert talks and interactive discussions.

As the event highlighted the urgent need for more sustainable agri-food systems in the coming years, tackling nitrogen loss and improving nitrogen use efficiency are one of the most critical challenges that is closely related to malnutrition, food waste, and the degradation of air and water quality, as well as climate change. Understanding how reactive nitrogen species behave in environmental compartments—both now and in the future—is a core objective of the ReCLEAN initiative, and such insights are essential for reforming agri-food systems toward greater sustainability.
